APPLETON

(RDUP10/27/96)
At 3 p.m., a man and his wife were driving south on Wisconsin Highway 41 just outside the city of Appleton (population 59,032). "As we were driving," the man recalls, "we happened to look to the southwest and saw a very shiny object. From the horizon there was blue sky, then a cloud bank, then more blue sky. This object was in the center of (below) the cloud bank. I thought it was an airplane with the sun glaring off the body. But below the shining or gleaming object and to our right was an airplane. You could see the shape of the plane and that it only showed glare off the top of it. The other object's whole body glowed brilliantly and had the distinct (saucer) shape of a UFO. It seemed to be somewhat larger than the plane even though it was farther away. It was visible for about two minutes, then disappeared into the clouds. As we were passing others on the highway, we saw at least two other drivers looking in that direction. We would like to know if anyone else saw it."

a Franklin man and his two sons "spotted it (a UFO) from their van while driving north (at) about 11:35 p.m. on County Highway G south of Maple Grove.

The UFO hovered silently in the sky for about 15 seconds over a woods, then descended rapidly, almost as if crashing, he told the Manitowoc, Wisconsin Herald Times Reporter. He described the UFO as "large and triangular with three reddish-orange lights."

"It was the strangest thing," he said, "There was no sound. Not a cricket, not a dog, not a frog. Nothing."

At 11:55 p.m., the man's family "was sitting in its living room when his daughter saw the second UFO."

This was another triangular UFO with "rounded corners but with the same reddish-orange lights. It hovered for a few minutes, then disappeared as quickly as the first."

At 3:45 p.m., William H. and his friend Julie were "sitting outside on our friends' porch" in the city of Milwaukee (population 636,212) when Julie spotted something strange in the sky over Lake Michigan.

"Julie says, awestruck, 'Oh, my God, look at that!'" Mr. H. recalled. "At that point we both sprang from our chairs and stared at an erratic bright yellow/orange light doing crazy spirals. And then it slowed down a little and dropped out of the sky. What I want to know is if anybody else witnessed what we saw?"

SOO LOCKS
11/23/53
(Casebook)(UFO Encyclopedia)
Radar at Truax AFB picked up an unidentified return over Soo Locks, in restricted airspace. Because it was a restricted area, an F-89 interceptor was scrambled from Kinross Air Field to investigate. Ground control vectored the F-89, piloted by Lt. Felix Moncla Jr. and with R.R. Wilson aboard as Radar Officer, toward the unknown. When they were near the object, ground control asked Wilson if he had it on his onboard radar, and he replied in the negative. As they closed on the object's apparent location, it began to move out over Lake Superior. Moncla followed, at over 500 mph, guided by ground control radar. Finally, after a nine-minute chase, Wilson was able to get a fix on the object with the on board radar. Ground controllers watched as the two radar blips, the unknown and the F-89, got closer and closer, until they merged.

But the blips never separated again. The single blip flashed off the screen at high speed to the north, and then the screen was empty. Attempts to raise Moncla on the radio failed. Search and Rescue teams were called, and for a time it was hoped that Moncla and Wilson would be found. They had special gear for surviving a crash into the lake. No trace, however, was ever found of them or their jet. No oil slick, no debris, nothing was ever found.

The Air Force at first claimed the unknown had been a Canadian DC-3. Canada denied that they had any aircraft in the area at the time. The the Air Force said Moncla had suffered an attack of vertigo and had flown the plane into the lake. Later they said the unknown had been an RCAF jet. Once again, Canada denied that they had any aircraft of any kind in the area at the time. Later, the Air Force said that Moncla's plane had exploded at high altitude. However, that would have spread debris over a large area of the lake.

STANLEY
8/9/96
(RDUP8/18/96)
"On Friday night (August 9, 1996), I was walking up a street that faces due east," John K. reported. "August can really exhibit beautiful clear skies, and this (night) was one of them. I was just gazing upward and taking in the panorama when I saw this white light which seemed to be almost 'floating' (the closest I can describe it) across the sky, heading northward. I stopped walking, for I thought the motion was just an illusion caused by my own motion. Well, I stopped but the white light didn't. I'm not too good at judging altitudes and speed, but the light was way up there, seemingly right in between the stars. My guess is that it had to be at least 30,000 to 40,000 feet. The object's speed was probably between 100 and 200 miles per hour. It had to be a craft of some sort because it was an exceptionally clear sky. The object would sort of dip toward the east, then slip back into a northward direction. The weirdest thing is that after ten seconds of watching this thing,it simply disappeared." "I didn't think too much about it, except that it was strange, so I kept walking up the hill. I stopped about halfway and looked upward, and saw an F-16, or what I took to be an F-16. It was going pretty slowly (usually by the time you hear them, they're gone.) The F-16 was at about half the altitude of the white object and heading east. When I reached the top of the hill, it had banked and was heading north in the path of the object."
