(UFO Encyclopedia)
A passenger plane piloted by Captain Raymond E. Ryan and co-piloted by William Neff was flying from Albany to Syracuse when the two observed a brilliant white light like an approaching aircraft with its landing lights on. It was at about 2:20 AM and they were flying at 6,000 feet. They banked to avoid a collision and the object made a right angle turn to pass them. Ryan estimated the speed of the object at roughly 1,00 mph.

Ryan turned on his landing lights to avert any further risk of collision and reported the encounter to Griffis AFB. With their lights on, they could see the object as an orange glow ahead of their plane. Griffis personnel told them to turn off their lights, which they did, and the AFB confirmed that they could see an orange object. The base scrambled interceptors, but the object flew off over Lake Ontario towards Canada.

Several children saw an object shaped like two saucers glued together come to ground level several times on the farm of William Butcher. It was chromelike, measured about 16 meters in diameter, took off with green and yellow flames, and illuminated the clouds when it flew into them. Captain james Dorsey and four technicians from Niagara Falss AFB investigated the case. they found no trace, concluding, however that the witnesses were not lying.

8:20 p.m. Witnesses: Mrs. William Butcher, son Harold, 17, and children. A large elliptical object, with a reddish vapor underneath, came close to the ground, then shot straight up into the clouds a few seconds later. Radio drowned out by static, a tractor engine stopped. When the object was on the ground, a steady beeping sound could be heard. Afterwards, a strange odor was noticed, and the next day, a purplish liquid, 2"x2" marks and patches of singed grass were found at the site. A bull bellowed and tried to break its bonds.

Four students working on a farm noted radio intereference and a peculiar "beeping sound," then saw an object at low altitude on the farm of William Butcher. It was shaped like two saucer glued together, had a shiny chromelike surface, diameter of 15 meters, height of 6 meters, and left a trail and smell of burned gasoline. It rose straight up into the clouds, which were illuminated with green light. Five minutes later it came down again over a woods, rose, and finally flew off to the southwest. Effects were noted on animals: milk production decreased from 2 1/2 barrels to one; a dog barked, and other animals were terrified.

A woman saw something like "a large aircraft", 30 meters in diameter, flying very slowly and low. It had a lighted red band around the middle and was coming straight toward her house with an oscillating motion. She still thought it was an aircraft of some new design when it stopped near her, 25 meters above ground. Then it flew backward over the water and hovered, making the same noise as a swarm of bees. The top section supported a series of red lights and a cabin with four portholes through which a control panel was visible. No occupant was seen. The cabin rose above the object, rotated, then glided back. The object tilted toward the west and rose toward the southeast, disappearing within 3 seconds at an 80° angle of climb after the 3 minute sighting.

A report in a 1967 issue of the NICAP _UFO Investigator_ reads as follows:

"A UFO over the United Nations in New York City was reportedly seen on November 22, 1966. Witnesses included at least eight employees of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, who watched from their offices on the 17th floor of 750 Third Avenue at 4:20 p.m. on a bright, sunny day. The UFO was a rectangular, cushion-shaped object ... (which) came southward over the East River, then hovered over he UN Building ... it fluttered and bobbed like a ship on agitated water."

Promptly at 5:10 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 1996, Mr. I.G. of Queens, NY was walking back to the office after having some postcards printed when he spotted an unusual object in the clear spring sky. I.G. saw the UFO "just over the Queens District Court House building. I have a habit of looking up into the sky whenever I'm outside. That day was a clear, cloudless blue sky. The view was totally unobstructed. I noticed a cylindrical object, wingless...it was very high up, maybe ten or more miles, and was still traveling upward. It looked like a rocket but there was no visible exhaust, and it just seemed to fly higher and higher until it disappeared. It literally left our atmosphere!"

I.G. said he "watched it for about five minutes and in all that time the cigar-shaped, pencil-like white object never moved more than five percent (degrees) from the ship's total parameter. It looked miles higher than any skywriting plane I've ever seen...It couldn't have been a satellite because they travel the entire vault of the sky. This thing just kept gaining tremendous altitude to the point where it was gone...The object just seemed to move so slow, as if it wasn't being affected by gravity or inertia. It kept its oblong shape throughout."

A 14-year-old boy and his friends spotted a UFO over Brooklyn. They described the object as "a blue-white bead high in the sky. It had a yellow-orange tinge. On Thursday, October 3, at precisely 5 p.m., James M., a thirtyish stockbroker who works in Manhattan, boarded the ferryboat for his commute home to Staten Island. At 5:45 p.m.. James "noticed lights out the window on the New Jersey side (of the boat). Hoping to get a better look, I left my seat and made my way to the stern. There were forty to sixty people out on the rear deck, all trying to look up at these points of light."

James counted 11 UFOs heading west over Bayonne, New Jersey "as they flew very high in the sky at an incredible speed." Just then, two U.S. Air Force jet interceptors appeared and began chasing the objects. Six dark olive-drab helicopters appeared moments later, trailing the jets and the UFOs. The objects fled in a northeasterly direction, skirting Newark and heading for Kearny and Belleville, New Jersey.

James described the UFO's color as "yellow like an incandescent bulb with a slight silvery shine. Several of the foreign tourists took photographs of them."

A Swissair Boeing 747 jetliner took off from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, bound for Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. This was the first leg of its transatlantic flight to Zurich.

While flying at 23,000 feet in a northeasterly direction, about ten miles south of New York City's Staten Island, the Swissair 747 was suddenly bypassed by a UFO.

According to Agence France Presse, the "white object" passed within 150 feet (45 meters) of the Boeing 747, flying at high speed in the opposite direction, i.e. to the southwest.

"The pilot said it was 'elongated, white and without wings,' although the co-pilot described it as 'rather round.'"

Swissair spokesman Erwin Schaerer said, "Neither the pilot nor the co-pilot spoke of a missile."

On Friday, September 26, Pat Cariseo of the National Transportation Safety Board declared that the UFO "was probably a weather balloon."

Later the same day, "the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the eerie object was merely a weather balloon."

"FAA spokesman Jim Peters said a United Airlines pilot flew through the area about the same time and identified the National Weather Service balloon."

"Peters said radar tapes as well as NWS records backed up the United pilots."

A man and his wife were walking to their neighborhood market in the vicinity of West 23rd Street and 7th Avenue in lower Manhattan, New York City, when they saw an unusual display in the sky.

"It was a beautiful warm evening here in New York City," Ian reported. "As we approached the corner...I looked ahead and saw (Boeing) 747 slowly cross New York's West Side. The reason we stared is because it was flying 'very' low, appearing very large in the sky with all its landing lights on."

"Looking northwest, we stopped at the corner of West 23rd and Seventh Avenue and watched the plane slowly cross the city and bank slightly to the southeast. It was at this time that out of the corner of our eyes, directly to our right (northeast) we spied a large green object passing over the city."

"This object appeared to be oval-shaped. It was flying higher than the 747 and was moving at an incredible rate of speed. We could not determine the altitude but the object looked large--about the size of a quarter held at arm's length."

The couple described the object as "round...with a white center and a glowing green oval-shaped halo." It was "higher than the 747 but not 'that' much higher."
