(McDonald)
The proprietor of an all-night bowling alley, was having coffee with two police officers when he spotted an object through the front window of his place. All three rushed out to the parking lot to observe what they described as a large flattened sphere or possibly football-shaped object, with a brilliant light shining upward from the top and a dimmer light shining down from the underside. The dawn light was such that the object was visible by reflected light even though the object's beams were discernible. It appeared at first to be hovering almost motionless at a few hundred feet above ground, and all three felt it lay about over Hwy. 5. Their estimates of size varied from a diameter of maybe 50 feet to about 100 ft. It was silent, and the three men all emphasized to me that the quiet morning would have permitted hearing any kind of conventional aircraft engines. The object moved southward along the highway by about a quarter of a mile or so. At about that juncture, it began to accelerate, and moved off almost horizontally, passing out of sight to the south in an additional time estimated at about 10-20 seconds.

At about 9:50a.m., officers and airmen at what was then called Muroc Air Base sighted a formation of three disc-like objects over the site. Ten minutes later, a test pilot sighted an object moving against the wind at an estimated 200 mph. Two hours later, base technicians spotted another object, and at 4:00 in the afternoon, an F-51 pilot flying at 20,000 feet spotted an object above that altitude.

Two Askania cameramen on the test rangemen observed a UFO and obtained a number (30) of photos of it. James D. Bittick and John R. Gettys, Jr. spotted the domed-disc UFO just as they reached Askania #4 site at Edwards, a bit before 8:00 a.m. that day. Bittick estimated that the object lay about a mile away when they got the first shot, though when first seen he put it at no more than 500 yards off. He and Gettys both said it had a golden color, looked somewhat like an inverted plate with a dome on top, and had square holes or panels around the dome. Gettys thought that the holes were circular not square. It was moving away from them, seemed to glow with its own luminosity, and had a hazy, indistinct halo around its rim, both mentioned. The photos were shortly taken by Base military authorities and were never seen again by the men. In a session later that day, Bittick and Carson were informed that they had seen a weather balloon distorted by the desert atmospheric effects, an interpretation that neither of them accepted since, as they stated to me(McDonald), they saw weather balloons being released frequently there and knew what balloons looked like.

"The craft approached silently from the east at approximately 50 to 60 miles per hour, 75 yards above ground and 100 yards to the northeast, appearing over a low rise adjacent to our location. As I approached this point, the craft stopped directly in front of me, apparently 50 yards above and 30 yards out. The craft was 60 to 70 feet (18 to 21 meters) wide, and 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7 meters), appearing cigar-shaped from the edge and as a thick disc from below. It was gunmetal-gray, metallic, with a brilliant blue-green glow emanating (from) around its rounded outer edge. There were no wings, windows, doors, antennae or any other appendages at all on the craft. Most remarkably, the craft made no sound at all. It was completely silent during the whole event, which lasted about four minutes.

The sighting took place at 10:30 p.m. just off California Highway 99 near Merced, a town north of Fresno. At first the witness thought it was a meteor, but then..."it dived and arced to the left (north). I tried to get my daughter's attention when it started glowing brightly... I was in shock when it became obvious that its trajectory was going to be right over my head...as it got close, I expected it to get louder. Instead, all noise stopped for the duration. It was absolutely silent, although I did hear a faint rumble. I would approximate its level-off at at least 2 miles east of me, and it disappeared into the darkness at about 2 miles west of me (heading for Mount Diablo). As it passed directly overhead, its blackness silhouetted against the background ambience for about 75 seconds. Long enough to see plainly a cross shape, with the head portion equal to the foot portion, arms shorter...the blackness seemd to have a luminescense about it. Its blackness was very distinct and clear, though I had a feeling there was more than I was seeing--a black-colored energy source on the bottom of an egg-shaped object...Its apparent size was about the size of a Lincoln's head penny held at more than arm's length. Its course was more than straight--it was perfect. The entire sighting lasted about seven seconds."

Late on Saturday evening two college students were driving north on California Highway 99. They were in rural Sutter County, just north of Nicolaus, 32 miles north of Sacramento and about twenty miles west of Beale Air Force Base. According to one student, "Out in the middle of empty dark farmland," they "spotted a triangular configuration of lights or a craft well up in the sky. The triangular craft had a glaring red light in the middle, which pulsed irregularly." Suddenly, the UFO "dropped much lower in the sky, to about 500 feet elevation (altitude) and moved sideways from east of the highway (near the Feather River) to over the highway. It suddenly accelerated to jet fighter speed and proceeded horizontally to a position just west of the highway where it came to a sudden halt and hovered."
They estimated the size of the UFO to be "as big as a house," adding that "Its surface structure was dark. Then suddenly the craft sent down a greenish glowing beam from the bottom toward the ground. Sparkling particles could be seen swirling in this column of green light. Just as suddenly the light beam went out, and the delta craft departed."

At 7:20 p.m., many persons went outdoors to investigate either (a) the unusual barking of neighborhood dogs, or (b) a disturbing and unusual sound. Soon many persons up and down several streets were observing an object round in planform, estimated at perhaps 50-60 feet in diameter, moving slowly towards the east northeast at an altitude put by most witnesses as perhaps 300 feet. Glowing ports or panels lay around its upper perimeter and "jet-like" orange-red flames or something resembling flames emanated from a number of sources on the undersurface.

A woman reported: "On May 1, I saw a bright, white craft shoot across the sky, from a point two miles above my car to a point about two miles away. The craft, or whatever it was, then vanished completely...It has been suggested to me that I saw a meteor or a chunk of satellite entering the atmosphere, but what I saw was too big and too low. There was also no reddish glow to indicate something burning in re-entry. This seemed to have a very craft-like form of movement."

At approximately 8:40 p.m., a very large UFO crossed the shoreline at Silver Strand Boulevard, crossed San Diego Bay, passed over Chula Vista and then downtown San Diego. According to eyewitness Tom Sanders, "My girlfriend and I were standing outside my friend's house at approximately 8:40 p.m. We had been glancing at the sky for a matter of seconds before we saw 6 or 7 dim white lights in a U- or V-shaped pattern heading southeast from over the westward Pacific Ocean. As the lights came closer to being overhead, they tilted (banked) to their right side and began to move more southward. At the same time, the lights veered over a small plane that was quite high itself. The size of the area of the lights seemed to be at least six or seven times the size (wingspan) of the plane," he added. "It was traveling at over at least twice the speed of the plane, heading in the opposite direction (south). Shortly after it passed the plane, the lights in sync rolled completely over and back to their original sequence, without changing direction. The lights became clearer as they got further away and then slowly vanished. There wasn't any sound at all. But the object was quite a distance away and above us. This wasn't a small UFO--it was way bigger than two or three of the planes I have ever seen or heard of put together. The area of the lights was approximately half the size of the moon from our visual point of view."

At 5:53 p.m., an object was sighted by a couple in the city of Santa Barbara (population 74,542). According to an eyewitness, "My wife and I observed a very bright white light at about 60 degrees south. Through binoculars we could not make out a defined sharp edge--it looked fuzzy at the edges. The object was drifting slowly and linearly in an easterly direction. Height could have been anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 feet but luminosity was very high. Conditions were clear and excellent visibility due to low humidity. About 10 or 15 minutes after sunset, the intensity instantaneously diminished to where it was barely visible as a dot in the clear but darkening sky."

A man out walking at 1:30 p.m. looked up and spotted seven white lights hovering in the clear blue sky. He described them as "a cluster of about seven yellowish-white lights hanging motionless in the air a good distance away. They were arranged like seven coins might look in your hand, some overlapping the others." Near the lights the witness saw "a deep red light that was very active and bounced around a lot. It also had a silver sheen to it. Then it started moving, still bouncing, towards me." The red-and-silver UFO "got to within a block" of the witness. At that distance, it seemed "to be about the size of a baseball. At that point, I got very nervous. I wasn't ready for any spaceship rides." The red-and-silver UFO zipped away, and the lights winked out at about 1:45 p.m. Sonoma is on Highway 12, just north of San Pablo Bay and twenty miles west of Travis Air Force Base.

Mrs. Ruby Lytle, one prime witness to the sighting, described the craft as having a gondola-shaped object attached to a light-colored hull. The object traveled slowly, with no audible noise, and she was positive it was neither a kite nor a weather balloon."
"At 8:30 p.m., on the same day, other residents including city communications operator William E. Smith, witnessed a revolving wheel-like object, complete with shiny spokes, sailing above Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, four miles (7 kilometers) south of Tujunga. At 9:17 p.m. PDT, seven people were relaxing on a back patio in Victorville, California, in the desert not far from Edwards Air Force Base, when they spotted what they thought was a meteor hurtling into Earth's atmosphere. According to the homeowner, a certified pilot instructor, the event was witnessed by his wife, himself and five other guests. He said, "I noticed what looked like a shooting star except brighter and without a tail streak." The UFO was speeding "across the southern sky in a northward direction." He described the UFO as "bright white in the center and a blue haze along the outer portion giving it a metallic look." All at once, the object "came to a dead stop" and hovered in the sky north of their house. It remained motionless for two seconds and then resumed its flight, "going in the same direction (north) at its original speed."
